Creating Pathways to a Brighter Future: How Apprenticeships are Transforming Young Lives

At King’s Kids, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to grow up feeling safe, valued and hopeful about the future. While many street-connected children in Malawi have experienced hardship, rejection and instability, we have seen time and again that with the right support, they can rebuild their lives and thrive.

One of the ways we do this is by helping older young people access practical training and apprenticeship opportunities that equip them with the skills, confidence and experience needed to build sustainable livelihoods.

Naz is one local business owner who has partnered with King’s Kids to provide apprenticeship opportunities for vulnerable young women at the Montessori school where she is Headteacher. She herself came from a humble background and never imagined she would one day be leading her own school. Yet employers recognised her dedication and potential and invested in her education and professional development, opening doors that transformed her future. Today, she is determined to do the same for others.

Reflecting on her experiences, Naz spoke passionately about the importance of creating opportunities for disadvantaged young people, particularly girls and single mothers. She emphasised that exposure, mentorship and practical experience can help young people recognise their own abilities and begin to imagine futures that may once have seemed impossible.

Naz highlighted that working with vulnerable young people is not always easy. Many have experienced significant challenges and setbacks. However, she stressed that giving up on them should never be an option. With patience, guidance and belief, young people can overcome obstacles and discover their potential.

King’s Kids exists because lasting change happens when communities work together. The programme brings together social workers, child-rights specialists, volunteers and local partners to support children and families in rebuilding their lives. Naz’s commitment demonstrates the important role that local businesses, schools and organisations can play in this process. By opening their doors to apprentices, interns and trainees, they provide practical opportunities that help vulnerable young people move towards independence and self-sufficiency.
