A Second Chance, Well Spent — Mary’s Story

Mary (not her real name) wasn’t always the one giving the advice.

During a recent King’s Kids life skills session on health and making informed choices, we were joined by Mary, a young mother whose honesty left a lasting impression on the boys in the room.

Mary spoke openly about her own journey — about the opportunities she once had, and the ones she didn’t take. Becoming a mother at a young age brought responsibilities she hadn’t planned for, and looking back, she recognises how much harder it became to pursue the paths that had once been open to her.

She didn’t share her story to dwell on the past. She shared it so the boys listening wouldn’t have to learn the same lesson the hard way.

“Use your time wisely”

That was Mary’s message to the group — simple, direct, and delivered with the kind of authority that only comes from lived experience. She encouraged the boys to take full advantage of the opportunities in front of them right now, while they’re still young enough for those opportunities to shape everything that comes next.

It’s moments like these that make King’s Kids more than a programme — it’s a community where young people learn from each other, not just from the adults in the room. Mary walked in as a guest speaker. She left having reminded a room full of boys — and probably a few facilitators too — what it looks like to turn hindsight into hope for someone else.
